  • Eggs: Pearl-white, sticky, bean-shaped, and roughly 1 millimeter long (about the size of a pinhead or grain of salt).

  • Nymphs (Babies): Translucent or pale yellow before feeding, ranging from 1.5 mm to 4.5 mm across 5 developmental stages (instars). Once they feed, a dark spot appears in their gut, making them visible.

  • Unfed Adults: Reddish-brown, broadly oval, flat like a credit card, and approximately ¼ inch long (the size of an apple seed). Their extreme flatness allows them to slide deep into micro-cracks.

  • Fed Adults: After consuming a blood meal, their bodies expand, becoming elongated, swollen, and dark reddish-black.

Important Fact: Bed bugs cannot fly or jump. They move strictly by crawling rapidly across surfaces, floors, and fabrics.

Bed bug life cycle
Bed bugs on furniture

Public Transit & Travel Hitchhiking - Bed bugs easily crawl onto coats, luggage, and backpacks in crowded spaces. In high-traffic networks like MCTS buses or local hotels, a flat, unfed bug can crawl off one person's bag, hide in the seam of a seat, and crawl onto the next passenger.

Secondhand & Thrifted Furniture - Bringing thrifted wooden frames, nightstands, or upholstered furniture into your home without a thorough inspection is a primary vector for infestations.

Multi-Unit Apartment Migration - In apartment complexes and assisted living facilities across Milwaukee, Wauwatosa, and West Allis, bed bugs travel through shared wall voids, utility conduits, and electrical wiring to move between neighboring units.

  • Rust-Colored Fecal Spotting: Tiny black or dark-red dots along mattress seams and baseboards caused by excreted blood. Wiping these spots with a wet tissue leaves a rusty smear.

  • Unexplained Blood Droplets: Small blood smears on pillowcases, sheets, or pajamas from crushed bugs or overnight feeding.

  • Linear Bite Patterns: Itchy red welts occurring in lines or clusters of three (often called "breakfast, lunch, and dinner"). Note: Bites alone cannot diagnose an infestation because individual allergic reactions vary widely.

  • Shed Exoskeletons: Translucent, amber-colored cast skins dropped by growing nymphs as they pass through their 5 growth stages.

  • Musty, Sweet Odor: Advanced infestations emit a distinct, musty odor produced by stink glands.

Bed Bug Foggers don't work

Avoid making these 3 critical mistakes, which often push pests deeper into walls or spread them to other rooms:

❌ Do NOT set off DIY bug bombs or aerosol foggers: Store-bought foggers fail to reach deep crevices and kill eggs. Instead, the harsh repellent chemicals flush bugs out of hiding and force them deeper into wall voids and adjoining apartments.

❌ Do NOT move to sleep on the couch: Bed bugs track the carbon dioxide and body heat you exhale while sleeping. Moving to another room causes the colony to follow you, spreading the infestation to your sofa or guest room.

❌ Do NOT drag an unsealed mattress through the house: Dragging an untreated mattress through hallways scatters live bugs and sticky eggs across carpets and doorways.
